After 6 months passes, Takaki receives a letter from Akari. From this time, they start to send their letter to each other.
But the winter of that year, Takaki has to move to Kagoshima. Kagoshima is way far from Tokyo. It is located on a different island on the west side of Japan. He thinks he will not be able to meet her anymore so he decides to go to meet her. (It will take a couple of hours from Tokyo to Tochigi. It is way closer from Kagoshima to Tochigi.)
But on the day of meeting her, their area get slammed by snow and the train is delayed….. Only time passes by……
Act 2 : Cosmonaut
This is in Tanegashima which is an island that belongs to Kagoshima. Yes, this is where Takaki moves to. Now, he is in high school and he is about to graduate from his high school. She does surfing for her free time but those worries cause her not to be able to stand on her surfing board. She is in a slump!
After a while, she hears that Takaki will go to college in Tokyo after he graduates from high school. She also gets out of her slump of doing surfing and she decides to confess her feeling to Takaki…..
Act 3 : 5 Centimeters Per Second
They become adults and they work now. Takaki had his girlfriend for three years but his girlfriend noticed that he is not into her. He struggles with his feeling by himself because his feeling face toward Akari all this time since he has separated from her.
On the other hand, Akari is…..
Takaki Tono – Main character. When he was a kid, he used to move around from place to place in Japan for his parent’s job. Akari’s family does the same way so they have a common thing to get along with each other. He likes to read books more than hanging out with people outside because he used to get sick often. Akari used to be the same way as he used to be so naturally, they became close to each other.
Akari Shinohara – Since she had the same lifestyle with Takaki, she started to like him. He had the same feeling toward her too. She used to be a shy girl when she was in elementary school so sometimes, she used to be picked on by other kids but Takaki used to protect her.
Kanae Sumida – Since Takaki moved in Tanegashima when he was a junior high school student, she has been in love with him. To be by him, she studied so much to catch up with him and she made it to go to the same high school of where Takaki goes to. But she hasn’t confessed her feeling to him yet. She likes to go surfing in the ocean.

Honestly, it was hard for me to understand this movie the first time so I have watched 3 times already! Now, I understood the reason why this movie has pros and cons. When it was my first time to watch this movie, what I felt was why is this movie is called a great movie? This was my first honest opinion. But I think I was expecting too many twists and turns. This movie is so flat and something won’t happen much. I think the way I have watched was wrong so I thought I had to watch it a couple of time so I might be able to get a clue.
In this movie, there are many scenes that contain psychological descriptions and it is written beautifully. This story is from the view of Takaki so boys can feel this better than girls. I really think this movie expresses the process of how his first love becomes his memory and recover from the something he has lost.
The director, Makoto Shinka is a great director who has been called next Hayao Miyazaki. He said the theme of this movie is a feeling of loss. I couldn’t get this theme when I watched it at first and probably, couldn’t understand this movie. That is why I was on the cons side at first. But since I have known this theme and watched it again and I think I felt like I understand this movie.
On act 1, the love is there.
On act 2, the love is going away.
On act 3, the notification of the love has been gone so it is time to become a memory and recover from it.
I think this is how it goes. The reason why there are many pros and cons is because it is up to how you take it. You can take it like this is a beautiful love but the circumstance of them disputed their romantic feeling. He can’t forget it! Oh, poor guy! But also, you can say like that guy is stupid because it took him forever to notice that their relationship is done. This is a depressing movie. What do you want to say about the story, if you have watched? I won’t deny either side because we should have different opinions and thoughts from each other. How you feel is how you feel. You know what I mean? I respect them but this movie is deep…… (´ﾍ｀；)
I think this is how we get strong through losing things and get hurt but notice the life is not done yet. We have to input these feelings to make it positive and we can make the next step. If I think about that, this movie has the meaning of how important it is to experience good and bad. That is what it taught me. But it is so difficult to understand this way for me. Maybe, I don’t have a fast brain or this movie couldn’t describe what it wants to tell the people well.
Oh well, we have all different sense of humor so I hope you will get something from what this movie wants to say to you. The graphic and music have a great match and it will draw you into the world of 5 Centimeters Per Second. What is the meaning of 5 Centimeters Per Second? On this movie, it means the speed of a leaf that falls from a cherry blossom to the ground. As it does, their relationship will little by little go away from them. This is how I take it! It is difficult to grow up to be an adult with carrying the feelings from pure age. But the experiences will grow us up. This is what we have to get through to live our life! It is a bitter story but I think I can recommend you guys to watch this movie and enjoy it!
Thank you for reading this post! I hope you will have a good day today! Bye(∩´∀｀∩)Bye!
